Every Which Way But Loose, and Any Which Way You Can where AWESOME movies, a mark of Eastwood's calibre as an actor ("Never work with Children or Animals" anyone?).
Kindergarten Cop was a smash Hit.. so was Twins and True Lies, Junior and Jingle All The Way were still pretty popular and Last Action Hero was by FAR the best of 'Worst" movies Action heroes made transitioning to comedy (Stop or my Mom will Shoot' anyone else?).
Arnie and Eastwood cant really be criticized for these works, as actually, they worked, and marked a successful transition between Genre.
As to the Narrator's query… actually, yes this is a technique to redefine and break type for actors which has been employed long before Eastwood.. and it's not only Action stars or tough guys who try it.
Dramatic actors like Gene Hackman, Robert Di Nero, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson have all tried to be taken… I guess one could say, less seriously, as opposed to more so, in the action star cases, by trying to be redefined as bankable comedy actors…and failed.
That's why one cannot really cite Arnold Schwarzenegger as the #1 type cast Action Star, that dubious Honour probably has to go to Jackie Chan, as Arnie not only made his biggest hits in the 'Sci-Fi' genre… but even assuming you don't wish to categorize this as different from Action, he also managed a smash hit transition to Comedy.. something as stated above, not even the likes of Di Nero or Nicholson have been able to as successfully do (yes I know people like Witches of Eastwick.. but As Good As It Gets is Jack's only real top shelf feel good movie Witches was .. meh… ).
Finally… shouldn't be surprised by Pesci. Joe Pesci had been doing stand up, comedy music, and all round slick, if vulgar, comedy for years and years before Home Alone.. and before his success as a Dramatic genre Tough Guy too.. in fact, he is even rarer a type of actor… the Comedian genre crossing to dramatic epics and tough guy action… so successfully people don't even know he was a club Muso and Funny man first
In my own honest opinion, I don't think that action stars are just about action. But don't forget that the movie industry is a very, very, VERY competitive field to be in and try to master. But, Not only do these actors have a lighter side, they can also sometimes pull of their own role in that particular genre. not only that, they probably have a family of their own that they want to appeal to, so they do action movies to be the hero in the house. they might also do movies in this genre because they want to expand their knowledge of movies? I'm not entirely sure about that. But sure, they may not be the best at that role, but you have to give them credit for trying. I sure do.
Chuck Norris' Top Dog movie might have been crap but I think a much better movie where he went soft was Sidekicks. That movie was a favorite of mine as a kid.
Kindergarten Cop isn't a kids movie. It has kids in it, but it's not a kids movie

It's simple… Tough guys have daughters.
Hmm, Mojo's come a long way in 3 years.
well of course a chuck norris movie revealing his soft sensitive side wouldn't work. chuck norris killed him while in the womb.
Arnold, clint eastwood, dwayne johnson, vin diesel, hulk hogan, chuck norris and jackie chan are not soft!
