As a licensed Physical Therapist, the most common reason the lateral ankle is sprained is actually due to a combination of weak ankle everter muscles like peroneals, high arches, a tight tibialis posterior muscle and overall joint ligamentous laxity. To correct simply stretch tib posterior strengthen the everters, and get a lateral shoe wedge to put the foot in a more pronated position while in weight bearing.
