Description:
The majority of us have grown up with the knowledge of numerous popular superstitions. When we were younger, we probably took the superstition literally and allowed the fear to control our lives. Superstitions, no matter how ridiculous they are, have a rich history in their origins. They weren’t created just to make our own lives more miserable. But instead, they have historical significance. Like the game of telephone, the origins eventually became muddied and they were lost. However, thanks to historians and people who were asking, “Why?” we now have potential sources of these superstitions.
For example, the superstition of breaking a mirror and getting seven years bad luck has probably saved numerous mirrors. The origins behind this superstition date back to the times of Ancient Greece when the Greeks would gaze upon their reflection in the water. If the reflection was distorted, it meant that your soul was disturbed. So, in this case, it would mean that the mirror reflected our souls in some way. When you break a mirror, you are creating distortion within your soul, and it would take seven years to clean up that negative energy. Other origins of the superstition date back to Victorian times when servants would accidentally break their employer’s mirrors, and it would cost about seven years of servitude to pay back the value of the mirror.
Speaking of the Victorian times, the superstition of opening an umbrella inside has origins in this time period. Umbrellas at the time were made from heavy materials, and if you opened your umbrella inside, you had the potential to do some real damage. But what about the superstition of walking under a ladder? This superstition has origins in Ancient Egypt, as triangles were believed to be spiritually sacred and held souls in their realm. If you walked under a ladder, your soul would be entering that triangle shaped realm and risked getting trapped in that realm.
So why is it bad luck when a cat crosses your path? Ask King Charles I. The earliest traces of the cat being a spiritual creature dates back to the times of Ancient Egypt, and the black cat was thought to have held significant power. King Charles had a black cat that was thought to have brought him luck, but when the cat died, his fate took a dramatically different turn as he was arrested and tried for high treason. Because of this turn of events, people thought that black cats were unlucky, and even cursed.
One of the most recent origin stories is, “Step on a crack and you break your mother’s back.” This particular one has roots in the civil rights movement, and the saying originated as, “Step on a crack and your baby will be black.” Obviously this is less politically correct, and this is an evolution that we’re happy about. Of course, when it comes to superstitions, they only have as much as power as you’re willing to give the idea. If you believe in it, then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

one time i broke a mirror by sitting on it my butts okay tho but it wasn't on purpose 🙁
I used to be terrified of cracks in the pavement because I thought if you stepped on a crack it would grow and split the earth in half

I was always told that "God bless you" was said after a sneeze as a form of well-wishing that the person wasn't getting sick.

About the black cats and number 13, I have a pet black cat who was born on a Friday the 13th so none of my friends will never come to my house, or at least not on a Friday the 13th.

I have owned three black cats so far. None of them have caused bad luck.

Another speculation on the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition is that when the French king, Philip, ordered all (?) of the Knights Templar arrested, tortured, and tried on various charges relating to witchcraft and Satan worship, the order was carried out at dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307.
