Description:
When it comes to the term, “science”, people like to throw it around in order to prove their opinions and research are correct. If you have ever participated in or dropped in on a debate amongst friends or colleagues, you’ve probably experienced this statement, “Well, scientific research says…” However, there is a major communication gap when it comes to what is proven to be scientific fact and an opinion that was thrown around with science and longevity turned it into a rumor, and eventually a major misconception. Well, people are tired of these misconceptions and have started to actively debunk these opinions.
One of the most “facepalm” misconceptions is that humans and dinosaurs coexisted with each other, and that fact has been aggressively debunked, as there is a gap of 63 million years between the existence of humans and dinosaurs. There is also no proof that lightening never strikes the same place twice, especially since the Empire State Building gets struck about 100 times per year. If you have ever been to a bull run or have watched a bull and a matador go at it, there is the common misconception that bulls hate the color red (part of that might be thanks to “Looney Tunes” as well). But in truth, the bulls are actually infuriated by the movement of the cape.
If you’re a singer or have ever been sick, you’ve probably heard that dairy can increase mucus production. But that is simply not true. Scientists have found no link to prove it either. Speaking of the human body, there has been a major misconception that the body only has five senses, when we really have over 20 different senses that range from pain, limb placement, temperature gauging, and much more. You could say those five sense really act as an umbrella for a plethora of multiple senses.
Animals are not exclusive to scientific misconceptions either. Goldfish are said to have a memory that only lasts three seconds, but scientists have proven this incorrect by using an experiment involving feeding time and a bell, and found that goldfish associated the sound of the bell to food. In this same experiment, scientists found that goldfish were capable of learning simple tasks. Then we have the misconception that bats use echolocation because they are blind. In truth, bats are not blind and they use echolocation to find food. In fact, not all bats even use echolocation anyway.
If you have kids or just love sugar, then we have a “treat” for you. Many times we have joked and withheld sweets from kids in fear of causing a sugar high. But this is a major misconception and scientists found that the energy level of a child who has sugar and a child who hasn’t isn’t much different. It seems that this misconception has been conditioned in our society to be true and it has turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Take this video as a lesson for not believing everything at face value, and there is always room to research to learn more. You may just be surprised at the results.
