Every day scientists, researchers and inventors around the world are pushing the limits of technology and knowledge to come up with new ways and devices to improve our quality of life. Televisions, microwave ovens, cellphones, stereos and even lightbulbs all had to be dreamt up, designed and made workable before they could be supplied to you. All of these creations and, indeed all of the inventions we come up with today, went through a prototype stage. Prototypes are often the first rough and not fully tested or developed version of something. Test pilots and drivers try out prototype planes and cars. Alpha and beta testers try our early releases of software. Prototypes are one of the biggest steps a program or manufacturer can take in creating something which is meant to be supplied in greater numbers.
Naturally, not all prototypes succeed. Often a design that makes it to the prototype stage fails in one way or another. This often results in the project being scrapped completely or a return to the drawing board to improve upon the design. Looking around the TV or internet it’s not hard to find news and articles about various prototypes which show promise. Statistically, however, much of what we read about won’t make it much further than this stage for a host of reasons ranging from technological limitations to cost to just plain failure in design. Nonetheless, some great creations do make it through, just ask the Wright Brothers whose prototype ended up changing the world after so many attempts over the previous centuries had fallen short.
