Description:
When it comes to pets, most of us will think about the typical dog, cat, bird, fish, and hamster. These pets are predictable, legal, and traditional. Unless one has over a dozen cats, these pets aren’t considered to be weird or unusual. But what about the animals that can be domesticated and become unique pets despite being a bit esoteric? Even lizards, snakes, and spiders are considered to be pretty much normal to have as a pet. Competitions amongst pet owners as to what animal is the best has resulted in a never-ending debate that has no end in sight. The industry of exotic pets has exploded in the last century, and animals that used to never be considered as a pet are now in high demand with people spending small fortunes in order to get their hands on these creatures.
There has been some debate as to whether these unusual pets should even be domesticated. Animal rights activists have argued that these animals would be happier out in the wild in their natural habitat. That hasn’t stopped the market for unique and exotic animals as pets. Websites are now dedicated to the teaching and raising of these unusual pets in hopes of creating a future full of domesticated wildlife. Perhaps this is the answer to the pending extinctions of some species? No longer will people have to visit the local zoo to see these rare and exotic animals, but instead tour their own neighborhood!
The animals in this video are legal to own in most of the United States. If one of these animals tickles your fancy and you want to bring one home, be sure to check your local laws to make sure you’re not unintentionally committing a crime. Regardless of your reason for owning an exotic animal, whether it be for popularity, money, or needing a different furry companion, offering an animal some sort of love and attention is always a rewarding experience. But be ready to pay a hefty price. Where the average cat or dog can cost anywhere from a few dollars to $100, these exotic and unusual pets can cost in the range of thousands of dollars.
If you were a fan of the television show, “Friends”, you may remember Ross Gellar owning a pet monkey named Marcel. If you were to try to get a monkey in the real world, you would be spending around $60,000. But if you want something a little cheaper, the fennec fox costs around $1,500 and is a perfect mix between a dog and a cat. What makes the fox attractive over other breeds in the species is the fact that the fox can be domesticated and even trained to use a litter box.
But if you need something a little cheaper, the hedgehog only costs around $300, and are adorable and cuddly for your cute animal needs. While these little critters need a lot of attention, especially with all of those barbs around their bodies, the hedgehog is a very unusual pet that is attractive to many animal seekers who don’t want a large animal.
