I’ve repeated this over and over like a broken record for many years, but it’s so important that it always bears repeating…
It really doesn’t matter how “healthy” your muscle building diet or fat loss diet is if you aren’t landing in the proper caloric range based on your goals each day!
I get emails all the time from frustrated trainees who can’t seem to make any real progress. They’ll give me their list of “muscle building foods” that they eat throughout the day, but when I ask roughly how many calories it amounts to and how much they’re aiming for, they have no clue how to respond.
A “healthy bodybuilding diet” or a “healthy fat burning diet” is entirely useless if you aren’t maintaining a consistent calorie surplus for muscle growth or a calorie deficit for fat loss.
You simply cannot build a significant amount of muscle if you aren’t taking in more energy than you burn, and you cannot lose a significant amount of fat if you aren’t burning more energy than you consume. It’s really that simple.
So, if you aren’t seeing the results you want right now, stop worrying so much about WHAT to eat to gain muscle or WHAT to eat to burn fat, and instead start tracking your total calorie intake as a whole as well as at least an approximate estimate for your protein, carb and fat intake.
This one step alone will mean the difference between seeing no results, modest results or outstanding results.
