There’s a common belief that if you eat late at night it’s going to lead to weight gain. Truth is eating late at night CAN make you gain weight, but it’s more about WHAT you’re eating not WHEN.
Your body doesn’t really know what time of day it is. If you take in extra calories at eight o’clock at night vs eight o’clock in the morning, you’re going to store those extra calories regardless of the time of day.
What might lead to weight gain?
Think about those times when you’ve eaten late at night. What types of food did you eat? People who eat late at night are often stress eating and the types of foods that they eat tend to be high calorie comfort foods. Eating low-nutrient, high-calorie comfort foods could lead to weight gain.
Many people make the decision to stop eating after a certain time when they’re trying to lose weight. This change in their eating habits often leads to weight loss but it isn’t because they stopped eating at a certain time, it’s because what they used to do is eat all evening long until they went to bed. The decision to stop eating after a certain time cut out all of the extra calories they were consuming, and that’s the reason they lost weight.
Although the time of day when you stop eating may not necessarily impact your weight loss, there are plenty of good reasons to spread your calories throughout the day. If you want to keep up your mental and physical energy, it’s important that you spread out your calories over several meals and snacks throughout the day. This could also help you with weight management and portion control.
