3D is still something most consumers don't want.
i would have added Lord of the rings into this, simply because they had to create SO many different things just to make those movies, from incredibly detailed miniatures/bigatures, first properly realistic flame cgi, the created the programme that allows for realistic crowd scenes where the characters aren't all identical doing the same thing. I feel like this should really have been somewhere on the list…though to be fair, all the ones that made it were perfect examples too.
Number 1 should be when Kubrick was born.
Making a billion or two billion isn't a milestone. It's just an inevitability. Why not the first movie to make a million, or 10 million…. Or 17,562,300 dollars. What a wasted opportunity to include an educational element. Sometimes I reckon Watchmojo starts these after lunch on a Friday….
missing "who framed Roger rabbit" – a milestone in anima+human actors.
There's a mistake. The Adventures of Prince Achmed was the first animated feature, not Snow WHite
So glad Disney was mentioned. But there are plenty of other influential Disney movies. Watch Mojo could even do a Top 10 Milestones/ Influential Disney Animation Studios movies.
Pinocchio – considered the technically best animated movie ever
Fantasia – first movie with surround sound
Cinderella – first Disney movie to have a soundtrack that was owned by the Walt Disney company. considered one of the best/most iconic animated features ever made.
Sleeping Beauty – serious attention to detail in design, probably the prettiest animated movie ever
101 Dalmatians – the use of xerox and the 3D car
Mary Poppins – animation and live action blend
Who Framed Roger Rabbit – different animation studios came together
Oliver and Company – first Disney movie to use computer animation
The Little Mermaid – Start of the Disney Renaissance, first movie to have broadway style music, thanks to Alan Menken
The Lion King – best selling hand-animated full length feature of ALL TIME
Mulan – first use of computer programs to create huge crowds. Also the first movie out of three to be completed in the Florida Studios
Zootopia – biggest cast
This is perhaps their worst list, Avatar above Star Wars and the great train robbery as a milestone, give me a break
can y'all at WatchMojo do a top 10 first in special effects in movies (scifi, fantasy, comic book related, etc.)?
I think avatar should maybe be an honorable mention, with Jurassic park actually on the list. Maybe make a different list for movies that were groundbreaking from a technical standpoint, like the jazz singer and the train one. Another list could have the groundbreaking movies that brought a unique feature to the audience like the first comic or video game movies. One for weirder movies like nightmare before Christmas. That was a huge way that more gothic themes got back into the mainstream and has a huge cult following even today. It's love rivals huge disney or Pixar titles, for every little mermaid or nemo tshirt, there's a nightmare before Christmas one.
PLUS EXCUSE ME BUT HARRY POTTER HAD SOME OF THE BEST COOLEST SCENES AND EFFECTS OF ALL TIME
LORD OF THE RINGS? Come on now.
I don't know, this list was all over the place. It was comparing apples and oranges. i guess my comment was kinda all over too but this top ten didn't seem to be fair.
I think the number one should , maybe the first movie like if u agree
Wait no The Birth of a Nation no 2001( or any Kubrick film )
The Matrix should at least have an honourable mention on this list. Completely changed that way action/sci-fi movies are made today. It started the slow-motion action shot. the entire movie of 300 wouldn't exist without the matrix.
The Blair Witch Project being the First Found Footage film sparking a whole new genre 🙂
A chronological list would have of been a more professional presentation of the "Milestones of Cinima."
2001
Y no James Bond
you forgot to put in how the jazz singer included black face and racist stereotypes. But I guess that doesn't matter cause it's cinematic history
I think that star wars should have been placed higher than number 8 because that eventually gave birth to CGI which a lot of films use
Wizard of oz????
I'm surprised that harry potter wasn't on here. Or twilight for that matter.
What about Wizard of Oz?
What is with all he weeb shit in the honorable mentions?
I'm so happy that Spirited Away was mentioned!! That movie is literally my childhood
Avatar is one of the best movie!.still waiting for the sequel.
I can't believe you didn't include (or considered) Russian Ark – the first feature length film to be created in one continuous shot. Sounds more like a cinematic milestone than grossing a billion dollars or being the first Summer Blockbuster. Also, the first use of editing was in George Albert Smith's The Kiss in the Tunnel from 1899.
The notion that "Titanic" is any sort of cinematic milestone at all is laughable. It's, um, achievement is a marketing one… cinema was its hapless medium.
star wars lower ranked than avatar? fucking toy story on rank 3? no non-american film, only in the honorable mentions?
metropolis? nosferatu? the horror movies of the 30s? new hollywood era? nouvelle vague? hitchcock? kubrick? kurosawa? dreyer? bergman? tarkowski? chaplin? keaton? none of all that?!
the milestones for watchmojo are: the first real camera narrative silent, the first with tone, the first full length cartoon, titanic, gone with the wind, star wars, citizen kane, jaws and… cgi? really?
What about the first movie ever? Or the first feature length movie ever?
WatchMojo, are you kidding me? Where is 2001 a space odyssey? Why did you put Star Wars and not a space odyssey on the list since it was Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece that led to Star Wars being made, without 2001 there will be not any big budgeted science fiction movie, so why didn't you put 2001 a space odyssey on the list?
Tron was mentioned and Wizard of Oz wasn't?
Just happy my favorite movie of all time is on here.
Um, shouldn't Gollum in the Lord of the Rings get at least an honourable mention?
where is Godzilla? he changed monster movies and stop motion, Godzilla started the thought of being in suits, ya, fuck you kong
No Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Where's The God Father?
why does nobody understands the meaning of avatar
This should read: Milestones in US – or rather: Hollywood – cinema. What about Battleship Potemkin, named best film of all times in Bruxelles 1958? About at least one film by the Lumières? Metropolis? A bout de souffle (when it comes to non-linear storytelling)? I could go on forever…
