Description:
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, from the tiniest of tiny Chihuahuas to the greatest of Great Danes. Pick a preferred breed of pet and odds are you have zeroed in on roughly what size of animal you would ideally like to cozy up to. While some people may seek out a pup that is more manageably petit, others live by the motto that “bigger is better” and that thinking can be extended to their dogs too. Large dogs may be prone to taking over a household and wreaking an often messy habit, but they can also be lovable gentle giants that can thrive as hunters and protectors.
Some dogs are genetically pre-dispositioned to be, well, big. The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) gene, which interacts with almost every cell in the body and controls cell growth and the way cells get energy, is largely responsible for the wide variance between animals of the same species, particularly dogs. Humans carry the IGF gene, but size determinations in us are predicated on a wide variety of different genes and different factors. The multiple factors in play help to control the degree of variation in human beings when it comes to size. Even though we may feel tiny in comparison to seven-foot tall basketball players, that discrepancy is still more rare and less pronounced than in most breed of dogs, where the disparity between Great Dane and Chihuahua would be like some humans standing at two feet and others growing to 31 feet.
Even by those broad standards, though, these dog breeds certainly stand out. While any pet pooch can tend to take over a home, testing the limits of their new confines, these 10 biggest pups in the world don’t have to work too hard to fill the space around them or to get noticed in a crowd. Anomalies exist across all species, such as Turkey’s 8’3” Sultan Kosen, the tallest man in the world. And just like Kosen, these colossal canine breeds are sure to draw the attention of those around them. Their owners, however, wouldn’t have it any other way, having grown to love their furry companions as they are and having learned to deal with some of the added complications associated with their size.
This list doesn’t measure size in any one specific way, but more so on overall presence. Some of these breeds grow towering mutts, some produce genetically jacked specimens and others bear the type of tipping-the-scales pooch that you hope doesn’t fancy itself as a lap dog. In any case, each of these breeds can tend to spawn four-legged fur balls that cause you to take notice. And yet, despite their threatening body proportions, most of the biggest dog breeds often tend to be mildly tempered, relaxed animals and make excellent family pets. Here are some of the types of monstrous mutts that make up the biggest breeds in the world:
