If you haven’t taken a moment to take in and appreciate the complexity and creativity when it comes to life on this planet, you are definitely missing out. Whether you believe in a divine creator or not, there is certainly something fascinating when it comes to how resilient life is all around us. With the help of medical attention, we have the ability to survive accidents, disease, and other illnesses and extend our lives longer than ever before. Granted, humans are lucky in the fact that we have developed our medical practice to the point to where it’s pristine and you feel safe going to a doctor. But since we live in a world where “survival of the fittest” is a staple of life, we have to be careful and cautious as to how we take care of ourselves and our bodies.
But there are creatures that live among us that are even more amazing, and perhaps dare we say, indestructible? When you take a look at these animals, regardless of size and species, the fact that they can survive in conditions that would instantly kill us should be humbling enough by itself. Here are ten amazing creatures that are not only nearly indestructible, but we can also dare to say that some could very well be immortal.
Lobsters are pretty much indestructible thanks to their hard outer shell. Yes, they are delicious, especially with butter, but these creatures are pretty amazing underwater. They typically live in an aggressive environment anyway, and have been known to live long periods of life. There was a lobster released back into the wild that was believed to be around 140 years old. Then we have the bdelloid, which is an amazing little specimen. Meaning that if you decided to be a bit sadistic and cut the animal in half long ways or sideways, it can reattach with its severed limbs or even regenerate into a completely new body.
Then we have the Greenland shark, which can survive subzero temperatures. If you were thinking of eating this shark for your next meal, think again, as their flesh is extremely poisonous. Speaking of sea creatures, the bowhead whale has some of the strongest blubber under the sea, and can not only survive temperatures, but there was a bowhead that survived several years with a harpoon in its neck. If you really want to check out a really neat creature that can survive the vacuum of space, look into the water bear. The water bear can live for centuries, and seems to be virtually indestructible as it can survive for long periods without nourishment, a smashing, disease, and more. The lungfish can survive various states of emergency and drought by burrowing in the dirt and covering itself with a special mucus to help preserve its hydration.
These creatures would make Charles Darwin proud. They have survived various states of evolution and many will surpass our lifetimes multiple times over by adapting to changes in their environment.
