I live in Clearwater in Pinellas county. We had a very close call with Hurricane Irma which pulled a Hurricane Charlie and did not maintain a due north track. If Irma (as forecasted) kept the track that the NHC released 21 Hours before landfall Tampa Bay would have seen a powerful Category 4 or possibly even a Cat 5 (in the event of decreased windshear) If you don't know Irma lost a few MPH off its forward speed which allowed the storm to be influenced by a stalled front that took it into Southern Florida and through the middle of the state. Sparing Tampa Bay to a moderate CAT 1 force wind. Hurricanes have 3 Major Factors in the extent of damage caused at landfall…1. How the storm comes in… from the south (would lessen surge) or slightly north (causing massive storm surge as water would be pulled into the bay) 2. How far winds extend (SIZE) 3. The actual strength of the storm…I would have to say with Irma being so strong, and over 100 miles larger than charlie was the closest call we had here of a "doomsday" storm. On my Channel for some of the footage i was anchored to a gas pump, and the rest was done from a motel that was protected from the North wind off the circulation.
