Anytime one has to make a trip to the doctor or hospital, rarely are they ever calm, collected, and at peace. Thankfully, modern medicine has made innovations and strides to where procedures and treatments aren’t as nearly as painful or barbaric as they used to be. But, what has occurred is not quickly forgotten, and some of the most tortuous and painful instruments in old time medicine have been immortalized due to the massive damage they caused, both physically and psychologically.
The first terrifying medical instrument is the trephine drill, which was used to drill a hole into the skull. With a circular frame with teeth at the bottom, the frame locked in the hole, while the little drill in the middle would proceed with creating the hole in the skull. If that sounds painful, well, it was to say the least. There was also the dental key, which was used to pull teeth out of the mouth using painful twisting and turning. The key would get the tooth out, along with taking the root and part of the gum with it.
In medieval times, leeches were a common practice in place of bloodletting, where leeches were used to cleanse the blood. The artificial leech was primarily used in different types of surgeries such as eye and ear surgeries. The device would cut through cartilage and flesh while sucking out the blood in the process. The osteotome skull saw was basically an old-fashioned chainsaw that was used to cut the skull open. If you’re ever seen a chainsaw in action, then you’ve probably seen the amount of debris it lets out. Soon after the skull saw was invented, the medical field realized that it could be used for amputating limbs as well. The tobacco smoke enema was thought to have been able to resurrect those who had drowned, and basically the way it worked was to insert the enema into the patient’s rectum and pump tobacco smoke. If you’ve ever heard the term, “to blow smoke up one’s ass”, then you have now learned the origin of that saying. Let’s face it; blowing tobacco smoke into someone’s bum isn’t really the most effective way to revive them.
The jugum penis was a device that was invented to deter men from masturbation, which was believed to cause numerous health ailments such as retardation, blindness, and sudden death. The device worked like a bear cage, where if the male became aroused and the penis started to firm up, the device would basically inflict pain to prevent any further arousal. The louse cage was used to help create vaccines for ailments where cages of lice would be strapped to the person so that the bugs could ingest their blood. Then, the lice would be dissected so their meal could then become a vaccine. The cervical dilator is just as the name says. In childbirth, doctors would use the dilator to force open the cervix. But this instrument didn’t last long as it would tear open the cervix and cause massive damage. Ouch!
There’s more where that came from, and you’ll have to watch the video to find out!
