Description:
In the days before the internet, if you wanted to buy something you either had to purchase it at a store or order it through a catalogue. For those really rare collectables and oddities, die-hard shoppers had to spend their weekends travelling to auctions, estate sales and yard sales to find the hidden treasures that were so often sold or thrown out without anyone knowing their true value. Then, in the 1990s, the internet took off and with it the ability to buy and sell almost anything online, whether it be through a legitimate retailer or just a private individual looking to get rid of some personal affects. The work and searching required to find what you were looking for made online shopping in those early days kind of like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
In 1995 the world of online shopping and auctions changed forever. A computer programmer living in California created a small auction site as a side-project. He quickly found that people would buy almost anything that came up for sale. Over the next couple years, the site matured and had its name changed to the now universally known Ebay. Starting out small, eBay had 30 employees and a revenue of under $5 million in 1997. Today it has approximately 35,000 employees and a revenue of nearly $18 billion. eBay is now universally known as the place to go for nearly anything you can think of purchasing. From rare collectables and sports memorabilia to appliances and artwork, if you can think of it chances are that you can find it for auction or sale on eBay.
Since then, a host of other online sites have sprung up providing venues and services for people looking to buy and sell. From free online classified sites to more professionally organized ventures, like Amazon, the world of online sales and buying is nearly limitless. That said, within this ever developing world of retail eBay remains the iconic symbol for those looking to buy stuff online. It may not stand out as much in respect to mainstream merchandise given there are so many other sites which offer similar products. Where eBay does remain head and shoulders above the rest is for those items which most people would label as bizarre, strange or unconventional.
The following video takes a look at just a few of the many types of ‘merchandise’ which have been put up for auction on eBay over the years. These are not usual, everyday items, however. No, ahead you’ll find a bizarre mix of things people try to sell and, in some cases, other people are willing to buy. Naturally, eBay has put a number of rules in place to prevent the sale of certain items, such as body parts and narcotics. As you’ll see, that doesn’t stop some people from pushing the boundaries of what can be sold or finding loopholes to post some rather questionable items. These are the weirdest things ever posted and sold on eBay.
