Seeing is believing. That’s what they tell us. After all, if you hear something, well it could just be a rumor or an outright lie. If you read something, then you’re at the mercy of the person who wrote it. Then there are pictures. They capture moments from the mundane to the epic and historic. You can actually see what the picture is of and there’s nothing that can really hide from you in this instance. Or is there. Pictures can and have been manipulated for every conceivable thing since the camera was developed. First there were staged photos or images that were touched up in a studio before being released. That was just the beginning and signalled an end to the one-time truth that seeing really is believing.
As technology has improved so has our ability to alter images to our liking. Those magazine covers that draw your eye at the supermarket checkout? Airbrushed. That photo of all those A-list celebs posing together? Likely Photoshopped. That image of the car flying round the track? Probably a CGI insert which is being used more often every day. Then there are the less high-tech ways that pretty much everyone uses to alter the images. One of the easiest is cropping. Cropping is a great way to cut out unneeded or unwanted parts of a picture. People often do this when posting an image on social media. However, as these following cases prove, cropping can also dramatically change the original meaning or impact of a photo. Whether creating a romantic memory from an uncomfortable situation or turning a totally phony moment into a ‘genuine’ one, cropping definitely had a huge impact when it came to changing the meaning behind these pictures.

  1. My good buddy, Mark, made a bet with me saying if I get 500 subscribers by June he'd give me £50, please help me win, I'll record him paying

  2. To be honest I've never been caught cropping my photos so I can't really say I been in hot water with the cropping thing
