10 Beloved Foods That Were Discontinued
As the mainstream consumer food market has evolved, the tastes and preferences of society have also changed. This has forced many food corporations to not only experiment with new recipes and flavors, but it has also forced them to also discontinue several of their items no matter how old or new it is. For those who grew up in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, the variety of food has changed dramatically. Even if a product was selling well, sometimes a company has no choice but to pull the plug for the sake of making room for a brand new item. But also, when an item is discontinued in one country, there is a chance that the product has found a second life in another country. It’s hard to picture ourselves in the shoes of these big wig corporate food executives, but let us visit some of the most beloved foods that were ultimately axed. This list will both bring you memories of your younger days while at the same time ultimately depressing you because you can’t find these foods anymore.
Crispy M&M’s were a big hit all over the world. But the United States wasn’t so lucky to retain this crispy chocolate treat, as they were discontinued only in that country. The rest of world that sells M&Ms products were lucky enough to retain crispy M&Ms and the product is still sold to this day, everywhere else besides the United States.
Snapple has been a beloved company that manufactures an array of different teas in various flavors. 2005 saw the discontinuation of Snapple Elements, which had flavors named after the elements of the Earth. Elements was extraordinarily popular in the early 2000’s, which was why many people were thoroughly confused when the company announced that they would be pulling the beverage from the supermarket shelves.
Taco Bell has been well known for creating various recipes and concoctions for their tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. It is cheap Mexican food with an American twist, which is why that it is so popular all over the United States. One concoction that made a huge splash in the fast food industry was the Beefy Crunch Burrito, which had rice, beef, nacho cheese, and spicy Frito chips with sour cream. Despite popularity, Taco Bell discontinued the burrito in 2011, and recently brought it back temporarily.
We are all familiar with the neon lime soda, Mountain Dew. The manufacturers of the soda introduced Mountain Dew Pitch Black as a Halloween special item in 2004. While it didn’t last very long in the United States, it became a permanent flavor in the country of Singapore.
If you grew up in the sixties and seventies, you might remember the orange and grape flavored Tic Tacs, which were discontinued in 1976. While the reason why for the pull has remained a mystery, it has been speculated that the red dye used to create the flavors was flawed and harmful to those who consumed it.
