Description:
Just a couple decades ago, if you wanted to watch TV you either watched over the air broadcasts or had a cable or satellite subscription. Looking for the newest films? Odds are that you had to head on down to the local video store and rent it. If you missed the latest episode of your favorite television show there was a good chance you had to sit around and wait for it to be rerun or maybe find a friend who recorded it on a VHS tape. There was no HD, there was no ‘On Demand’ and if you were really into certain television shows you had to schedule your life around the broadcasts. How times have changed.
The other side of the story involves the world of computers and the internet. Before the mid-90s, home computers were not powerful or advanced enough to run anything like we can today. The internet, if you had access to it, was still very rudimentary with most people using it to send emails or look up news. With personal computers rapidly increasing power and capability and internet related infrastructure more than keeping up, users and uses for the ‘World Wide Web’ have grown exponentially. Today we take it for granted but the growth and development of this sector has greatly altered the way we do business, entertain ourselves and conduct our lives.
Today, what used to be two very separate entities – TV/Movies and Computer/Internet – have come together quite successfully and greatly influenced the development of each other. Leading the way in this marriage of technology and entertainment is Netflix. The California-based company is now a household name after nearly 20 years of existence. Mention internet streaming and online television and you immediately think of Netflix. The company has grown and become such a fixture in the entertainment industry that almost every electronic device we buy today seems to have Netflix installed or available.
Interestingly, very few people, especially in the television industry, took Netflix seriously when it first came out and when it first starting streaming content. They saw Netflix as a fad and a service which could not stand up to the major network powerhouses. After all, streaming tv shows seemed pretty gimmicky in a world which was so used to watching their programs through the proven traditional methods of satellite and cable. We guarantee that these skeptics have all changed their tune and are scrambling to save their networks as profits and viewership plunge. The trend of people cutting their cable or severing their satellite hasn’t stopped and Netflix is a major reason for this. The company continues to grow and there are no indications Netflix is slowing down any time soon.
