2017 was a great year for video games, especially when it comes to original art styles. Cuphead, Bendy and the Ink Machine, and Night in the Woods are just a few of the gorgeous games released last year, but this is not the first time innovative animation has played a major role in gaming. In fact there’s actually a game from 2006 that goes as far as implementing its art style into its gameplay mechanics! In this episode, GG will reveal the history behind the under-appreciated game, OKAMI!

Hi Vinny
2017 was a shitty year for gaming
Also if you guys own a PS4 you should definitively try out Gravity Rush
Im guessing Game Theory will do a youtube theory or smth again
Okami was one of the best damn games I ever played in my life. Respect.
I know this video is about a video game, but I feel what I'm about to say has surprising relevance.
This lesson on how the written chinese language works, particularly the note on how putting two symbols together can result in an entirely new meaning, reminded me of an old cartoon I watched way back called Tai Chi Chasers. Thanks to the explanations of chinese/japanese language, and the fact that I recognized the symbol for "fire", I realized that Tai Chi Chasers subtle teaches this very detail of the language.
[Potential minor spoiler warning for anyone that actually cares] If I'm remembering this correctly, the basis of the show was that the protagonists could use cards to effectively materialize the meaning of whatever symbol was on that card. Card has the symbol for "fire" on it? It'll create fire. As for how it subtly teaches the "put two things together for a new meaning" part, they could do just that with those cards; the one example I remember is the main protagonist using two cards for "fire" to create "flame", which for all intents and purposes was just a really really powerful version of the "fire" effect.
I dunno I just think that's a cool thing to realize. Thanks GG, for indirectly making me realize that even kids' cartoons can teach cultural stuff in a way that isn't too blatant or obnoxious.
I remember basically studying the manual for the Wii version of Ōkami a while ago just taking in all the attention to detail and amazing stories it includes. You can tell so much love went into this game just by flipping through the mythology and glossary, helping the player understand some more foreign ideas such as the gestures of pounding mochi and Capcom explaining its effort to combine old and new
*Hugs*
5:47 So in a way, writing "woods" in Japanese could effectively be saying "forest through the trees".
Man, no matter how hard I try, I cannot get away from that phrase!
I introduced Ōkami to my husband. He seems to not like it as much as his childhood favorites of Sly Cooper and Crash Bandit
dont play that song in the background, its too much! the feels!
Dude, where's Gravity Rush 2?
It came out 2017
My life in Okami:
"Hey look, a dead tree! I'll just bloom that for some praise!"
*Draws circle, sun comes out
"No, I actually wanted to use bloom."
*Tries again, makes the wind blow
"No, bloom!
*Accidentally hits some water behind it, making a waterspout
"Gah! Bloom"
"Bloom!"
"Bloom!"
BLOOM FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!!
Okami's artistic design with its lore still manages to stand well this day. The characters are another awesome attribute the game benefits from. The ending is still one of the most powerful I've seen.
Okami's the only game I actually cried from. Forever my favorite.
Imagine Your Trapped in a room that is filling with water. There Are No Doors Or Windows. How Do You Get Out?
Dude, I love what you do, but can you do a video on korean culture pls you like never do it and the small times you have you horribly botch the words. P.s I'm korean
I have always wanted this game never got the chance to download it
god I love this game! I still remember how … awed I was when I first revived Shinshu Field… This game is truly a masterpiece
These episodes by Gaijin is why I love them so much; as a Western gamer, most of the lore and meaning behind creative elements in games are lost, but with videos like these, we can understand and appreciate them much more. Thanks again Gaijin!
Okami: teaching you how to paint since the PS2 era of gaming 🙂
can you do something Dragon Quest related? its long running video game series with Dragon ball creator Akira Toriyama designed art assets and monsters based on world wide mix of mythologies.
Okami is my favorite game! Its nice to see it get some credit.
I loved 2017 smh
A great video as usual, Gaijin. But answer me this. Has anyone ever thought to analyze Yu-Gi-Oh on this channel? Do one video covering just one specific card or archetype in the game and I will like it as soon as I get it watched.
Wait minute, Okami was remade again for PS4?
I miss this game… I almost forgotten it ever existed…
I don't know how to describe my appreciation for this content. It's just amazing how much your enthusiasm for this game shines through in the video.
If the video is about okami I WATCH IT NO MATTER WHAT.
I have played this game
I still have my ps2 and okami game and i love it
This reminds me of this one time when I wanted to paint the kanji for fire. I just couldn't get it quite right. None of the results were bad or anything like that, but I don't accept anything but the best from myself.
