Description:
Back when the first Magic Mike hit theaters in 2012, the film’s star Channing Tatum regaled audiences – predominantly female ones – during media appearances along his promotional tour with stories of his life as a stripper. In interviews about his own personal inspiration for his role as the movie’s titular character, Tatum has recounted both funny anecdotes and stories about some of the darker times around his unconventional career path towards Hollywood stardom. As an 18-year-old who spent eight months of his life stripping for money, the “21 Jump Street” star has spoken candidly about his tenure as ‘Chan Crawford’, including drug experimentation and awkward interactions with older women who would grab his butt, all the while telling him that he reminded them of their nephew.
Tatum’s candor and openness when it comes to his pre-A-list days as a male stripper is rare among famous folks bearing regrettable pasts. Although he certainly isn’t the only showbiz standout who has taken his clothes off for money, few celebs are as willing to share their experiences and even fewer have found a platform whereby they could connect their past life to their present one, as Tatum has done with Magic Mike. Sure, stripping can represent an easy way to earn a few bucks and can offer a cheap thrill for those who want to be the center of attention, but it isn’t exactly the most respectable or esteemed line of work, particularly as a prior career choice for someone with a public profile.
Ironically, the shame of some stars to cop to their stripping histories stands in direct contrast to the public’s widespread fascination over the profession. Even those who aren’t typically inclined to frequent a strip club or purchase a lap dance can be rendered curious and intrigued by the thought of scantily clad sex objects dancing rhythmically and seductively on stage. Even Hollywood has long been drawn in by strip club culture, with movies on the subject like “The Full Monty”, “Burlesque” and even as far back as 1962’s “Gypsy” enjoying box office success before Magic Mike came along. When you consider the connection between bold, charismatic performance art and the culture of celebrity, it makes increasingly more sense that so many stars started off appearing on stage long before anyone knew their real name.
Now, in this age of an insatiable, TMZ-driven thirst for juicy gossip, particularly as it pertains to recognizable pop culture figures, information tends to have a way of getting out. Even polished stars who are veterans of the talk show circuit will sometimes slip and reveal a little tidbit about themselves that they would have otherwise wanted kept closer to the vest. Unlike Tatum, these 10 celebrities did not have a pet project that happened to connect to their past field of work that they could use as a convenient publicity hook in interviews. Instead, the stripping pasts of some stars were revealed in blink-or-you-missed-it interviews that would surely be quickly forgotten. Or maybe not…
